Profile Wiki is a reference work of biographical and organizational profiles. Each entry summarizes a person's or company's professional record and cites the public sources it is drawn from.

This page explains what Profile Wiki is, who produces it, and how it works. If you are the subject of a profile and want something changed or taken down, go straight to Profile Wiki:Corrections and removals.

What Profile Wiki is

  • A reference work: entries are written in third person, factual register, and are expected to cite sources.
  • Reviewed before publication: no edit becomes publicly visible until an editor approves it.
  • Open to contributors: anyone can register and propose changes.
  • Openly licensed: text is available under CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • Versioned: every entry keeps a complete, public revision history showing who changed what and when.

What Profile Wiki is not

Being direct about this matters more than sounding impressive:

  • It is not a social network. There are no follows, feeds, or messaging.
  • It is not a directory anyone can add themselves to on demand. Entries are assessed against inclusion criteria.
  • It is not an endorsement. A profile records what sources say about a subject. It is not a recommendation, rating, or verification of that subject's claims about themselves.
  • It is not a substitute for professional advice. See the general disclaimer.

How an entry gets published

  1. Submission or commission. An entry is proposed, either by an editor, by a registered contributor, or by or on behalf of the subject. Some entries have been produced on commission — see Profile Wiki:Ownership and funding.
  2. Sourcing. Claims are checked against published sources. Anything that cannot be sourced is cut rather than softened.
  3. Editorial review. An editor reviews the draft against the editorial policy and the inclusion criteria.
  4. Publication. Once approved the entry becomes publicly visible and is added to the sitemap.
  5. Maintenance. Entries are corrected on request and revised as new sources appear.

Contributing

Anyone can contribute. The process is:

  1. Create an account at Special:CreateAccount. You will be asked a simple question to keep automated signups out.
  2. Confirm your email address. A confirmation link is sent to the address you give. You cannot edit until you have clicked it — this is the only barrier to contributing, and it exists so that every contribution is attached to a reachable person.
  3. Make your edit. You can create new entries or improve existing ones.
  4. Wait for review. Your change is held in a queue and is not publicly visible until an editor approves it. Nothing you submit appears on the live site, or to search engines, before that.

If an edit is declined you will not always be told why, but you are welcome to ask via the contact form. Edits are declined most often for missing sources or promotional language — see the editorial policy before writing.

A note on user pages

Every account gets a page at User:YourName listing your contributions. It is created automatically, is not editable, contains no biographical information, and is excluded from search engines. It exists so that contributor names in page histories are not broken links.

Editorial team

Profile Wiki is produced by a small editorial team. Approval of contributions is restricted to that team; registration does not confer it.
