Profile Wiki:Privacy policy

This policy covers personal data on Profile Wiki. It has two distinct parts, because there are two different situations:

Part A — you are the subject of an entry. Our content is information about you.
Part B — you visit or contribute to the site. We handle limited technical and account data.

Part A is the one most privacy policies leave out, and on a site like this it is the more important of the two.

Part A: if you are the subject of an entry

What we publish

An entry about you may include your name, professional role and employer, career history, education, publicly documented achievements and awards, your own public website and social profiles, your nationality, your place of birth at city/state/country level, and where documented a year of birth.

What we deliberately do not publish

Home address, personal phone number, personal email, full date of birth, national identifiers, financial account details, medical information, and family members who are not themselves public figures. If you find any of these in an entry, that is a mistake — tell us and we will remove it promptly.

Where it comes from

Published sources: news and trade press, regulatory and corporate filings, official registries, published work, and the subject's own public website or professional profiles. Some entries were prepared with material supplied by the subject or someone acting for them — see Profile Wiki:Ownership and funding.

Why we consider this lawful

We publish information about people in their professional capacity, drawn from material already public, for the purpose of maintaining a reference work. Under GDPR terms this is a legitimate interests basis, balanced against the subject's rights — which is why removal is available on request in most cases, and why the categories above are excluded outright. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have the right to:

access the personal data we hold about you;
rectify inaccurate data — we will correct errors regardless of any legal obligation;
erasure — ask us to delete your entry;
object to our processing;
restrict processing while a dispute is resolved;
complain to your data protection authority.

To exercise any of these, use the contact form — the process is in Profile Wiki:Corrections and removals. There is no charge and you do not need a lawyer. We respond within 30 days.

Retention after removal

When an entry is removed it is deleted and the URL returns HTTP 410, and we remove it from our sitemap. We keep a minimal record that a removal request was made and actioned, so that the same entry is not recreated later. We cannot control copies held by third parties such as search engine caches or archive services; on request we will tell you what we know about where copies may exist.

Part B: if you are a visitor or contributor

Visitors

You do not need an account, and do not need to accept cookies, to read Profile Wiki.

Our infrastructure providers process your IP address, request time, requested URL, user agent and referrer in server logs, for security and abuse prevention. We do not use these to build profiles of visitors, and we do not sell or share them for advertising.

These are the third parties involved in serving this site, and what each one handles:

These providers operate servers outside your country, so delivering the site necessarily involves an international transfer of connection metadata.

We measure traffic, and we do not sell your data or run advertising. We record which pages are read, roughly which country visitors arrive from, which pages link here, and how quickly pages load. Our CDN handles the loading and forwarding of this measurement; the tools that receive it are:

Cloudflare Web Analytics — cookieless. It sets no cookie, does not

 fingerprint your device, and cannot follow you to other websites.

Google Analytics 4 — provided by Google. This one may set first-party

 analytics cookies in your browser, and it means the measurement data described
 above is transferred to Google, including to servers outside your country. Google
 processes it as our service provider.

We use this to understand which entries are read and where problems are, not to build advertising audiences. We load no advertising scripts and no social-media trackers, and we do not sell or rent any of it.

A consent banner lets you accept or decline this measurement. Declining prevents both tools from loading. Nothing about reading Profile Wiki depends on it, and we do not treat a refusal as a reason to restrict access or to show you anything different.

How long we keep this data

Web server access and error logs — about 30 days, then deleted automatically by log rotation. We do not archive them elsewhere.
Account email addresses — for as long as the account exists.
Queued edits that are declined — discarded at the point they are declined.
Published edit attribution — permanent, for the licensing reason given under Contributors.

Cookies

Browsing Profile Wiki does not require cookies. If you log in, the wiki software sets session cookies necessary to keep you logged in and to protect against cross-site request forgery. These are strictly functional. We do not set advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

If you answer the consent banner, your choice is stored so that you are not asked again on every page. Cloudflare Web Analytics sets no cookie. Google Analytics may set first-party cookies to recognise a returning browser and to group requests into a visit; these are set only where you have accepted the measurement, and are readable only on this domain. Our CDN may also set a short-lived cookie to distinguish automated traffic from real visitors; it is a security measure and is not used to profile you.

Contributors

Registration is open to anyone. When you register we process:

your username, which is published permanently against every edit you make — that public attribution is how an openly licensed wiki works and it cannot be undone for edits already made;
your email address, which you must confirm before you can edit. It is not published. We use it to confirm the account, to let you reset your password, and to contact you about your contributions;
your edits, including those still awaiting review. A queued edit is visible to editors before it is public, and is discarded if declined;
your IP address at the time of an edit, retained in technical logs for abuse prevention. It is never published. Because anonymous editing is disabled, every edit is attributed to a username rather than an IP address, and no page history on this site displays a contributor's IP address.

Each account also gets an automatically created page at User:YourName listing its contributions. It contains no biographical information, is not editable, and is excluded from search engines.

If you want your account's email address removed, use the contact form. Published edit attribution cannot be removed, for the licensing reason above.

Children

Profile Wiki is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

Material changes are noted with a revised review date; the page history keeps every version.
